Balancing Our Activities - Creating Shared Value
We are committed to creating long-term, shared value for our stakeholders and for our company. Whether it is improving our production efficiencies and safety performance, collaborating with the packaging supply chain to further optimize the contribution of packaging to sustainability, remaining true to our core values or investing in our communities, we continue to make Ball a more sustainable enterprise.
Despite the challenging economic conditions, 2009 was - financially - one of Ball Corporation’s most successful years in its 130-year history. And sustainability remains a key component of our strategy for continued success. We issued our second sustainability report in June 2010.
Setting Priorities
2009 was a year of action; as we focused on further embedding sustainability into our operations, quantifying our sustainability activities, and re-aligning our approach to sustainability and reporting.
Based on feedback from internal and external stakeholders, our efforts are focused on five sustainability priorities where we believe our engagement is of greatest value for Ball and our stakeholders. Key 2008-2009 accomplishments in our five sustainability priorities include:
Packaging: We expanded the production of our lighter weight aluminum can end, which saves significant amounts of resources and energy.
Energy: We improved our energy efficiency (measured as energy consumed per 1,000 units produced) by 9 percent.
Water & Waste: We improved water efficiency by 5.5 percent and introduced globally consistent waste metrics.
Safety: We continued efforts toward continuous improvement and reduced our global total recordable incident rate by 38.5 percent.
Talent Management: We made considerable progress in implementing our "people strategy" across all businesses to ensure that Ball’s 14,000-plus employees continue to be our greatest asset.
Feedback
We aim to communicate with all of our key stakeholders and to continue our vision of creating shared value. We encourage you to give us your feedback on our sustainability efforts and our reporting.
